How long does it take to earn a PharmD degree online?

To be eligible for a PharmD program, students must first complete two years (or 64 semester hours) of prerequisite coursework. This is followed by four academic years in the professional PharmD program. Some students need four years to complete prerequisite courses. Thus, it may take upwards of six to eight years to earn a PharmD degree.

Is a bachelor's degree required for admission to a PharmD program?

A bachelor's degree is not required for admission. However, it is preferred among many institutions. Most institutions accept a minimum of 64 semester hours of pre-pharmacy courses for admission into a PharmD program.

Is a licensed pharmacist considered a doctor?

Technically speaking, earning any kind of doctorate would make you a doctor. However, this will be different in a professional setting. Graduates with a PharmD must identify themselves as pharmacists to not confuse patients and peers on their scope of practice.

Online PharmD programs in 2026: every ACPE-accredited distance pathway compared

Ten US pharmacy schools now teach most of the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) online. None of them is fully online. Every one puts you on campus for at least a few days a year. Every one also sends you into real pharmacies for more than 1,700 hours of supervised practice, because the accreditor requires it. This page lists all ten side by side: length, travel, where your rotations happen, what you need before you apply, and which states some schools cannot admit you from.

Every program below is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the accreditor state boards of pharmacy recognise for the PharmD. Details come from each school’s own admissions pages, checked in September 2026. Confirm the current terms with the school before you apply, since cohorts, fees and travel dates change year to year.

The ten programs side by side

All ten are entry-level programs. You do not need a pharmacy licence or a pharmacy degree to apply. If you already hold a licence and a BS in Pharmacy, skip to the nontraditional pathways further down; those are a different product.

Two things stand out in that table. First, “online” means different things. D’Youville wants five campus days every trimester; LECOM and Howard want a few weeks a year. Add up the travel before you compare tuition. Second, the limits are real. Findlay cannot admit you if you live in Colorado, New York or Puerto Rico. Butler and LECOM take US citizens and permanent residents only. Your own state’s rules are on the state pages linked at the bottom of this page.

What “online” cannot mean in a PharmD

ACPE’s accreditation standards set a floor for hands-on training that no format can waive. Every PharmD must include at least 300 clock hours of introductory pharmacy practice experience (IPPE), spread through the coursework. It must also include at least 36 weeks, or 1,440 hours, of advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE): the full-time rotations of the final year. At most 60 of the 300 IPPE hours may be simulated. So a distance PharmD moves the lectures, case work and exams online. The 1,740-plus hours in a pharmacy stay in person at every school. What differs between schools is where those hours are placed. Findlay and D’Youville place you near home. Creighton, LECOM and Duquesne use sites across the country. CU Anschutz keeps the final year in Colorado. If you cannot move for a year, that column matters more than the length of the program.

Nontraditional pathways for licensed pharmacists

Two schools run a separate online PharmD for pharmacists who qualified with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and hold a current US licence. These are shorter because you already practise. They are closed to everyone else.

MCPHS Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy: five semesters, part time, described by the school as 99% online with one visit to the Boston campus. For US-licensed pharmacists.
Shenandoah University Nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy: 53 credit hours (38 didactic, 15 experiential), seven semesters if you work in a clinical role and qualify for two prior-learning portfolios, otherwise about eight. Many courses are self-paced, experiential work can often be done at your own workplace, and there is one required campus visit for a clinical skills assessment. Minimum GPA 2.5.

How to apply

Most of the entry-level programs take applications through PharmCAS, the central application service run by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. You send one set of transcripts and one personal statement, then pay a fee per school. The prerequisites in the table are each school’s own list. The courses overlap heavily: general and organic chemistry with labs, biology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, calculus, statistics. The total credit count is what differs. It runs from 37 credits at Duquesne, if you already hold a bachelor’s degree, to 65 at Findlay without one.

Minimum GPAs run from 2.5 (Duquesne, and the Shenandoah nontraditional pathway) to 3.0 (Howard), with 2.7 at D’Youville and 2.75 at Findlay. Several schools no longer ask for the PCAT: MCPHS does not require it and St. John Fisher has waived it for its next cohort. Math and science courses have an age limit at some schools. MCPHS will not accept them if taken more than ten years before you enrol, and D’Youville asks for them within five years.

What the programs cost

Only some schools publish a full price. The figures below are the ones stated on the schools’ own pages. Findlay lists total tuition of $174,384 for the distance PharmD. MCPHS lists $68,100 per academic year for the accelerated three-year program in 2026-2027, with extra costs for the on-campus experiences. Butler estimates $51,530 a year for its 139-credit program, plus $1,140 to $2,365 for each of three immersions. St. John Fisher lists scholarships of up to $40,000. For every other school, ask admissions for the current per-credit rate and the immersion fees before you compare.

Licensing after you graduate

The format of your degree makes no difference to the licence. Every state requires the NAPLEX, the national pharmacy exam, and most also require the MPJE, a law exam for the state you want to practise in. You register with the board of pharmacy in that state. Intern-hour rules vary by state, so check yours before you choose a program with few placement sites near home.
