The Pharmacy Technician Certification Test: What to Expect and How to Prepare

If you’re looking to become a Pharmacy Technician, it’s quite simple, and you generally just need to have your GED. You may find an employer who offers on-the-job training, but you should also consider getting certified.

Certified Pharmacy Technicians have a slight advantage over Pharmacy Technicians that aren’t certified; their careers have more room for growth and expansion.

Depending on which state you intend to work in, you might need to be a certified Pharmacy Technician to work in a Pharmacy. Certain employers also prefer to hire certified Pharmacy Technicians, so do some research into your desired employer’s hiring requirements.

There are two options for certification; the PTCB exam and the NHA ExCPT. They’re legally recognized as equal qualifications, but they’re completely different and administered by different boards. They both are suitable for new students and more experienced students who are interested in continuing education.

The PTCB Exam

The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board has been certifying Pharmacy Technicians since 1995 and is well-recognized in the healthcare industry.

Getting a passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam demonstrates to employers that the Pharmacy Tech is committed to medication safety and effective patient care, as well as well-versed in pharmacy law.

Eligibility requirements

  • You have to be a resident of the United States of America or its territories.
  • You have to have completed a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-recognized training or education program. Alternatively, you also need to have equivalent work experience.
    • There is a directory of over 1400 PTCB-recognized programs to choose from.
    • To qualify as equivalent work experience, the pharmacy technician needs to have worked a minimum of 500 hours in that role. This path is best suited for experienced technicians who weren’t able to attend a PTCB-recognized program.

  • Compliance with any applicable Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) policies.
  • A passing score on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).

FAQs

What is the difference between the PTCB exam and the NHA ExCPT?

You can take either test and still be considered a certified Pharmacy Technician. The main difference is that the PTCB certification has been around longer and is the gold standard for Pharmacy Technicians. It’s recognized as such in all the states of the U.S., while the NHA still isn’t recognized in a few states. You should check which one your state recognizes to help you make an informed decision.

What’s good textbook to prepare for the pharmacy certification test?

Pharmacy Technician: Practice and Procedures is a good textbook to prepare for the pharmacy certification test. The book covers important topics such as pharmacology, drug interactions, dosage calculations, and more. It’s also filled with practice questions to help you prepare for the test.

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive review, consider enrolling in an online pharmacy technician course. These courses cover all of the material on the certification exam and often include practice tests as well.
